Highland heather is a plant that originated in Europe and is now becoming popular in gardens stateside. These plants are tall and wide, providing adequate coverage in any garden. You need to plant highland heather in an area with a cool and dry climate.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plant highland heather during the early spring months. You should pick an area in your garden that will receive partial sun. An area with full sun is also an acceptable choice.

  2. Step 2

Mulch the soil before you plant the heather. This makes the soil more acidic and protect the highland heather during the colder months. Purchase mulch from a garden center or use pine needles.

  3. Step 3

Transplant small highland heather plants to the garden. Larger plants do not transplant well and will likely die. Dig the holes for the plants twice the size of the heather's root ball. This encourages root growth.

  4. Step 4

Expect the heather to grow 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide. Use these measurements to space the highland heather during planting.

  5. Step 5

Prune the flowers once they bloom. This encourages the highland heather to keep producing beautiful blooms throughout the seasons.

Tips & Warnings
  • Highland heather blooms for about 6 weeks during the spring. It can also last the same amount of time for a fall planting.
  • Highland heather will not survive the extreme cold. You will have to replant it annually in places that have bitter winters.
  • Don't perform too much maintenance on the highland heather. It can survive in poor soil conditions and only requires the occasional pruning.
