Granny quilts are designed to look like the granny afghans that were popular in the 1960s and 1970s. They involve a lot of cutting and sewing--one Granny quilt is made up of hundreds of rectangles. So, if you are patient and are looking for a fulfilling project, follow these steps and make a Granny quilt.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Batting
  • Cutting board
  • Fabric
  • Granny quilt pattern
  • Iron
  • Quilting pins
  • Ruler
  • Sewing machine
  • Template plastic
  • Thread
  • White colored pencil
  1. Step 1

Buy a Granny quilt pattern. You can find a pattern on the Internet, in fabric stores and in books.

  2. Step 2

Purchase your fabric based on the size of your quilt and the pattern instructions. Bold solid colors usually look best on this type of quilt.

  3. Step 3

Wash and dry your fabric to prevent shrinkage later. Press it; use spray starch if you would like, but don't use steam.

  4. Step 4

Prepare a plastic template for your rectangles. Cut your fabric based on the instructions on your pattern. Allow for a quarter-inch seam on all sides.

  5. Step 5

Stitch your rectangles together to form blocks, and then stitch your blocks together. Always leave the seam allowances.

  6. Step 6

Place batting between your quilt top and your backing. Baste or pin the pieces together. Make sure that everything is even and your corners are 90-degree angles.

  7. Step 7

Hand or machine quilt each block. You may want to quilt around the edges of each block.

  8. Step 8

Using store-bought or homemade binding, bind the edges of your quilt. If you make your own binding, measure the area around the quilt and add six inches.
