Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for diarrhea, which may contain blood, mucus or pus. This is the most common symptom used to diagnose shigella poisoning.

  2. Step 2

Watch out for nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps as these are also common symptoms of shigellosis.

  3. Step 3

Observe young children for seizures. Although they are rare, seizures may be another symptom to make the diagnosis in children under two-years-old.

  4. Step 4

Visit your doctor as soon as possible. The shigella bacteria are very easily transferred from one person to another.

  5. Step 5

Have the necessary lab tests done for a trustworthy diagnosis. The doctor will send your stool sample to the lab where the germs will be grown and identified.
