Shigella bacteria infects the intestinal tract and causes diarrhea, which is often bloody. Only a small amount of the bacteria is necessary for an infection. Children ages two to four and people in developing countries find themselves the most at risk for getting an infection from shigella bacteria. The outbreak and spread of this highly communicable infection can be prevented. Read on to learn how to prevent shigella.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Water

Wash your hands regularly, especially after using the restroom, before eating and before handling food. Supervise children and verify they wash their hands appropriately. See "How to Wash Your Hands," under Related eHows.

Drink only water that has been chlorinated or treated with ozone, a powerful oxidant often used in wastewater treatment facilities. Eat only pasteurized dairy products.
Step3
Dispose the diapers of an infected child in a sealed garbage can.
Step4
Disinfect any area touched by someone with a shigella infection.
