How to Reorganize After a Hurricane

Hurricanes damage hundreds of homes each year. They can hit unexpectedly and with a powerful force. After a hurricane hits you may find yourself lost and unsure of what to do. Here are some steps to help you reorganize after a hurricane.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Wait for the "all clear." Injuries occur most often when you go outside before the hurricane has completely passed. Once it is safe to go outside proceed to reorganize yourself.
Step2
Relax. It is easy to panic when a hurricane occurs. Find a way to quiet your mind. Having a clear head will help you to organize and make a plan of action for your family and self.
Step3
Create a plan to help you organize what you want to accomplish. Make a list of the things you need, people you need to contact, and any documentation that you need. Keep the list close to you.
Step4
Make contacts. Call your insurance agent as soon as possible. If you live in an apartment call your landlord to inform them of the situation.
Step5
Get plenty of water and food. Your tap water may be contaminated, therefore try to get bottled water. Dry non-perishable food will not spoil. Having bottled water and dry non-perishables are essential after a hurricane because you will not know how long your power and water will not be able to be used.
Step6
Be safe. Keep children and pets out of the affected area. Flooding is a frequent byproduct of a hurricane. The stagnant water can be contaminated and very dangerous to touch or drink. Wear rubber boots and gloves when you inspect your home.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your radio tuned to the local news and emergency broadcasts stations.
  • Make sure your home owner or renters insurance is current and up to date.
