Use a sheet of plywood as a workspace and cover it in thick towels. Lay the copper over the towels. Nail down the copper directly into the plywood at the corners.

3
Hit the copper sheet with a ball peen hammer. Create different effects by varying the intensity of each blow. Hit the sheet hard to make deep indentations, or softer to create lighter ripple effects.

4
Create a unique texture by hitting other objects that you place over the copper. Hit a spoon, a can or any other sturdy object to make interesting shapes in the copper. Use a larger, textured item to create a more even effect on the backsplash.
