Things You'll Need:
- Acoustical spray gun
- Compressor and hopper
- Joint compound
- Knockdown knife
- Primer and paint
-
Step 1
Get an acoustical spray gun to do the bulk of the work. Also acquire a compressor and a hopper, which can be rented from a hardware store.
-
Step 2
Mix joint compound and water. Make a mixture that is thin enough to flow through the spray gun but thick enough to stick to the wall.
-
Step 3
Put the mixture into the spray gun. Spray a few pieces of paper to make sure the nozzle is on the right setting. Adjust the nozzle and the compressor until you get the spray effect you desire.
-
Step 4
Spray the walls, leaving a fairly even pattern. Allow the wall to have different thicknesses of the mixture, but keep one general look to the walls. Mix the smaller and larger blobs of the mixture instead of concentrating on the smaller blobs on one part of the wall.
-
Step 5
Allow the joint compound to dry for about 20 minutes, until it is tacky but not dry.
-
Step 6
Take a knockdown knife and slice through the joint compound blobs. Hit them quickly in order to knock the ends off without smearing the compound. Leave a rough texture on the wall and let the wall dry for at least a day.
-
Step 7
Prime the wall and paint over the texture.
