The steeple cast is an upward, almost completely vertical fly fishing cast. The steeple cast is generally done with shorter lengths of fishing line. It is relatively easy to steeple cast a fly fishing rod if you follow the correct procedures.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put the tip of your fly fishing rod in the water. It should not be completely submerged. The tip of the fly fishing rod should be touching the surface of the water.

  2. Step 2

Turn your rod. Your reel should be facing the sky. Your thumb should be under your grip.

  3. Step 3

Project your line almost vertically. It should go almost straight up in the air.

  4. Step 4

Stop your rod as you normally would with a false overhead cast, at the top of your final forward motion.

  5. Step 5

Turn your rod hand again. Immediately after you stop your rod, turn your hand 180 degrees.

  6. Step 6

Make a normal forward cast. You may want to curve your forward stroke to prevent loops trailing in the water.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because the steeple cast projects your fly fishing line almost vertically, you avoid getting caught in these obstacles.
  • Do not get discouraged if you have trouble mastering the steeple cast. Continue to practice. Experts recommend practicing the steeple cast in the grass or in your driveway before moving into the water.
