Step 1
Use a heavy line and a stout rod to cast frogs. Try either a 20 to 30 pound monofilament or a 50 to 80 pound super braid line, which can cut through grass.
-
Step 2
Use a long rod--7 to 8 feet--with a light tip to improve casting accuracy.
-
Step 3
Look for grassy areas with moss growing on top of the water or areas of shallow water where debris such as sticks has piled up. Areas under low-hanging trees are also good for frog fishing.
-
Step 4
Add weight to the frog by either putting a few small weights inside the bait or by wrapping a bit of lead wire around the hook. Choose the weight of your frog based on how large of a fish you are hoping to catch. Use a heavier weight for a heavier fish and a lighter weight for a lighter fish.
-
Step 5
Study and imitate the natural motion of real frogs. These amphibians normally sit on something, like a piece of debris, rather than just stopping in open water.
-
Step 6
Wait a beat or two to set the hook after the fish eats before trying to turn it to you.
