Step 1
Understand the rankings. Fly fishing line comes in different weights, numbered one through 15. One is the lightest line weight, and 15 is the heaviest line weight.
-
Step 2
Know your rod and reel. Your fly fishing rod and reel will have numbers corresponding with the line weight numbers. For the best results, all three numbers--rod, reel and line weight--should match.
-
Step 3
Know your flies. Heavier flies (larger flies and wind-resistant flies) require heavier line weights to cast. Light flies can be cast with light line weights.
-
Step 4
Decide what fish you want to catch. You will need to pick your equipment based on what fish you want to catch. If you are fly fishing for large fish (or saltwater fish) you will want to pick a heavy fishing line weight. Small, light fish do not require as heavy a line weight as large fish.

Step 5
Look at your rod and reel. Most manufacturers will recommend which fly fishing line weight to use with their rod on the packaging. This can be a good general guide. However, keep in mind that your situation--what you are fishing and where you are fishing--is unique. Take those factors into account when selecting your line weight.
