This bookshelf's dimensions are 6-by-6 feet. Read on to learn how to build Hungarian shelves.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Measuring tape
  • 3 2-by-4 boards cut 6 feet long
  • Saw
  • 4 1-by-8 boards cut 6 feet long
  • Drill
  • 12 wall metal peg screws
  • Wood glue
  1. Step 1

Mark a 2-by-4 board 1 foot from one of the ends. Measure the remainder of the board in 1 1/2-foot intervals starting from the 1 foot mark. Mark each interval. Repeat this process for the other 2-by-4 boards.

  2. Step 2

Cut notches into the 2-by-4 boards at each marked line. The notches need to be 1 inch wide and 3/4 inch deep. Repeat this step for each measurement you have made.

  3. Step 3

Measure and mark a 1-by-8 board using the same process you did with the 2-by-4 boards except the measurements needs to be in 2-foot intervals instead. You must end up with four measured marks. Repeat this process for the other three 1-by-8 boards.

  4. Step 4

Cut notches into the 1-by-8 board on the measurement marks. The notches need to be 2 inches wide by 1 1/4 inch deep. Repeat this process on the remaining three boards.

  5. Step 5

Measure the wall and insert the wall screws 1/2 inch above each notch of the 2-by-4 boards. The 2-by-4 boards need to be spaced 2-feet apart. The boards must be mounted on studs. The measurements for this shelf are for studs that are 24 inches apart. If the studs are 16 inches apart, adjust the 2-foot measurements to 16 inches.

  6. Step 6

Apply glue to the inside of the notches. Insert the notched 1-by-8 boards into the 2-by-4 boards. Slide the notches together. Add spacers to the bottom of the 1-by-8 boards. Make the boards fit tightly at the notches. The size of the spacers depends on the amount of movement you have on the shelf.
