For many non-profit and volunteer groups, a bake sale is a great way to raise money for a cause. With the right combination of planning and assistance, your bake sale can go off without a hitch. Follow these easy steps to have a bake sale.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Secure a venue and determine a date. Bake sales are best held in locations where your supporters are already present or where a large group of potential supporters will be. Hold a church bake sale in the lobby after service or a school bake sale during plays, recitals or PTA meetings. Consider contacting a large retailer in your area and ask to set up in their lobby or outside the doors.

  2. Step 2

Advertise your fundraiser in area papers, newsletters or organization websites. If your group has a supporter list, consider doing a mass mailing to promote the event. Often, local television stations advertise charitable events for free on their websites or during broadcasts.

  3. Step 3

Recruit help. Use your network to organize bakers to supply the goods for your sale. Inform them of the items needed and packaging desired. Encourage a large variety of items such as cakes, pies, cookies, cupcakes and other desserts. Include options for diabetics or dieters too like sugar free or low fat versions of traditional items. Have the volunteers pre-package items before the fundraiser.

  4. Step 4

Gather supplies for your bake sale. Get tables to display the items, stickers or cardstock for pricing, volunteers to man the tables and a money box for collecting profits. Consider signage to advertise your sale and decorate the area to make it appealing.

  5. Step 5

Arrive at the location of the bake sale with your volunteers at least an hour before it is scheduled to begin. Price your items and set up the area. If you are outdoors, make sure there is plenty of shade to ensure perishable goods don't melt.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have volunteer bakers make an ingredient list for each item they bake. It's helpful to have on hand to answer any questions from buyers.
  • Price items individually, but consider offering a deal for bulk purchases. This encourages patrons to buy more.
