OpenOffice Calc is a free spreadsheet and database program provided by Sun Microsystems. Spreadsheets are documents that calculate information and organize that information into an understandable format. Making a spreadsheet in OpenOffice takes time and patience but the end result is worth the work. Read on to learn how to make a spreadsheet in OpenOffice Calc.

Step1
Open OpenOffice Calc from the Start menu on your computer's desktop.
Step2
Click on "New" in the File menu and pick "Spreadsheet."
Step3
Pick a style for the spreadsheet. Open the style list from the format menu. Add color, change the font and font style, format for numbers, add borders and organization from this window. Themes that effect the entire spreadsheet are also available in this gallery. Click "Gallery" and then pick "Choose Theme." Select the theme you want from the list provided.
Step4
Add a title to your spreadsheet. Click "Headers and Footers" from the Edit menu. Type in the title information in the box. Highlight the title to change its size, color or font.
Step5
Input equations in the spreadsheet's cells. The equations used in Microsoft Excel work the same way in OpenOffice Calc. Add these equations before you type in the numeric information or type them in as you input the information.
Step6
Type the information into the cells. Format each cell separately as you work by right-clicking on the cell.
Step7
Insert graphs, pictures or sounds into the spreadsheet. Open the "Insert" menu or the "Gallery" menu and choose the appropriate item to insert.
Step8
Save the spreadsheet as you work. Click on "Save" from the File menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • OpenOffice Calc allows users to export their spreadsheets to a PDF file if needed.
  • OpenOffice opens and edits Excel spreadsheets. Excel opens and edits Calc spreadsheets as well.
