How to Become an ENT Physician

An ear, nose and throat doctor, or otolaryngologist, belongs to the oldest medical specialty in the United States. Otolaryngologists specialize in the treatment of disorders and diseases of the ears, nose and throat. Follow these steps if you are interested in becoming an ear, nose and throat doctor.

Instructions

    • 1

Finish medical school. During your last year you will be exposed to many different specialties, so you will have a chance to see if you would like to be an otolaryngologist.

    • 2

Complete a residency program in otolaryngology. Five years of specialty training is required.

    • 3

Pass the American Board of Otolaryngology examination.

    • 4

Choose a sub-specialty. There are many, including neurotoxology (ears, balance and tinnitus), pediatric otolaryngology, rhinology (noses), allergy, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, head and neck or laryngology (throat). Some otolaryngologists complete a one- or two-year fellowship in one of these specialties.
