Snorkeling is a great way to get introduced to underwater life. Snorkeling on a shipwreck provides a fun and educational experience for the whole family. The wreck and its surrounding reef typically are home to some of the most beautiful fish and coral in the ocean.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Get your equipment. To properly snorkel on a shipwreck, you will need a mask, snorkel and fins. Depending on how strong of a swimmer that you are, you may also want to bring a life vest or personal flotation device. Depending on where you are, you may also be able to rent this equipment. Check with a local dive shop for rental options.
Step2
Sign up for your trip. Shipwrecks are a popular diving and snorkeling location. Check with trip availabilities at your local dive shop. Typically, you will be with a big group on your trip and there will be plenty of other boats on the wreck as well.
Step3
Pay attention to your guide. Before you get in the water, your snorkel guide will give you an overview of the wreck, brief lessons for beginners and let you know when to come back to the boat.
Step4
Relax and enjoy the beauty. Snorkeling provides a bird's-eye view of the wreck. Feel free to enjoy the wreck and dive down to get a closer look.

Tips & Warnings

  • When diving down in the water, you will need to clear your snorkel once you get back to the surface. The best way to do this is to make a "T" sound into the snorkel. This will clear all the water from the snorkel and allow you to breathe normally without taking your head out of the water.
  • Be careful when diving down into the wreck while snorkeling. You don't want to get down into the wreck, run out of breath, and have no way to get back to the surface. Don't go underneath any overhangs or in the cabin of the boat unless you are 100 percent positive that you can make it back to the surface.
  • Don't be scared. Marine animals are more scared of you than you are of them. Don't do anything to provoke them.
