Washington and Oregon states offer some of the best waters in which to go whale watching. Planning a whale watching trip is a worthwhile endeavor. You and your family will witness some of nature's most serene and impressive creatures in their natural habitat. A carefully planned whale watching trip is an unforgettable adventure.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide if you want to go on a guided tour or venture out on your own. Research times and prices. Visit state websites to find common areas to see whales.

  2. Step 2

Plan your trip between April and September as these are the best times to see whales. You can view them in the Puget Sound and off the coast of Oregon, but the San Juan Islands are the most common destinations for whale watchers.

  3. Step 3

Charter or rent a boat that can take you out to sea. Take the boat out around the islands or the sound. Find a spot away from other boats but still a mile or so within land.

  4. Step 4

Wait with binoculars in hand. This is the hardest part of whale watching. You must be patient and keep your eyes on the sea. The reward is well worth it.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you decide to take a whale watching tour, the longer the boat is out the better your chances of seeing whales.
  • If you see one whale surface, focus on that area. Chances are other members of the pod will soon be surfacing as well.
