Tilapia is a mild-flavored, fresh water fish. It has a delicate flavor and tender meat. The meat is firm enough not to flake and fall apart on the grill but it is not thick like a salmon or tuna steak. Tilapia's mild taste and texture make it a versatile fish to grill. Use your creativity to discover all the different variations of grilled tilapia.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tilapia filets
  • Non-stick aerosol spray
  • Olive or vegetable oil
  • Metal spatula
  • Seasonings
  1. Step 1

Prevent sticking. Spray the grill with a light coat of non-stick spray or use a paper towel to wipe a light coat of olive oil or vegetable oil on the grill.

  2. Step 2

Fire up the grill. Heat the grill to 300 degrees (400 degrees if you want to blacken the tilapia).

  3. Step 3

Drizzle the fish with oil. Coat both sides of the tilapia with a very light layer of oil.

  4. Step 4

Season the tilapia. Season both sides of the fish with spices or a marinade of your choice. Be basic and only use salt and pepper or go crazy with lemon pepper, cayenne or Old Bay seasonings.

  5. Step 5

Grill, baby, grill. Place the tilapia on the oiled portion of the grill. If your grill has a raised tray or hanging basket, cook the fish there. It is best to keep the fish out of direct contact with the fire. This is especially true if you are cooking other items at the same time.

  6. Step 6

Watch the time. If the fish is directly on the grill, cook it for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. If the fish is not in direct contact with flames, the cooking time needs to be closer to 10 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Check for doneness. You know the tilapia is done when the meat is white all the way through and the juices from the fish run clear.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save your eyebrows. Don't spray the grill with non-stick spray if the fire is lit.
  • Tilapia is a very mild fish and is over-powered by too much flavor. Be sparing when seasoning the fish.
  • Do not flip the fish repeatedly. This causes the fish to break apart.
  • Do not leave the fish unattended when it is cooking on the grill.
