Decide how thick of a winter coat you need. If you live a place that gets extremely cold, you'll need a rather thick winter coat. If you live in a place that gets only moderately cold and doesn't get cold that often, you can afford to go with a thinner winter coat. If you are moving to a new place, research the weather history of the place you are moving to.

Visit the Burlington Coat Factory website (see Resources below). On the left side navigational panel, click on the "Coats" link. On the subsequent page, click on "Men" if you are shopping for men, "Women" if you are shopping for women and "Children's Outerwear" if you are shopping for a child. On the next page, click on the type of coat you are looking for. After you click on that link, you will be given a selection of coats.

Pick a coat that is stylish and in your price range. Ensure that the coat you have selected is appropriate for the weather in your area. Having a lightweight coat in an area that can get extremely cold would be a waste of time and money. If you live in a rainy area, select a coat that is waterproof. Also, get a coat that matches with a lot of the clothing that you already own. A coat in a neutral color like black or brown can be worn with a number of items.

Place your order with the Burlington Coat Factory website by filling out your name, shipping and billing addresses and credit card information. Once you place your order, you will be shipped your coat. Keep all receipts and paperwork you get with the coat.
