When you add parts to the engine, the alternator generally gets in the way. You can read through the directions on how to install the new part, but most don't tell you how to retrofit your alternator. It's not a difficult job, though, once you know how to do it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Label parts and uninstall the alternator. You need to know how to reattach the alternator once you are ready to retrofit it. You must mark the wires and other parts that you plan to disconnect and the place where the parts connect as you disconnect the alternator from the engine. Label the connections the same so that you can easily reconnect the alternator.

  2. Step 2

Determine the location for the alternator. Keep in mind that the alternator needs clearance from all parts. Close the hood and look at the engine from underneath the car to ensure the location is a proper fit for the alternator.

  3. Step 3

Find an attachment point. Now that you know where you want the alternator, you need to find the closest place to attach the stock generator brackets. Depending on where you plan to locate the alternator, you may need to modify the brackets or purchase new ones from a local auto part dealer. If you alter the brackets, you must make sure that the alternator is steady and does not wiggle or your alternator may break.

  4. Step 4

Attach the alternator. Most alternators are connected to the car by bolts. You may need to drill holes to attach the brackets. Some people choose to weld the brackets to the car. You need to secure the alternator to prevent it from moving while the engine is running.

  5. Step 5

Reconnect the alternator to the battery. You need to reconnect any parts that you uninstalled in Step 1. You must use your marks to ensure that the alternator is properly reinstalled.
