Daruma was a Buddhist saint. It is said that he meditated for such a long time that his arms and legs atrophied and fell off. Because Daruma spent so long in meditation, he is a symbol of persistence and success. People in Japan purchase a Daruma doll with two blank eyes. They fill in one eye when they make the goal or wish and then the other eye when their goal is completed or their wish comes true.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for Daruma dolls that have blank eyes or that are already filled in. Daruma come in many shapes and sizes, so have fun looking for ones that are unique.

  2. Step 2

Search eBay or other auction sites, Asian markets and doll shows. If you travel you can sometimes find Daruma dolls for sale at Buddhist temples.

  3. Step 3

Examine the construction of the Daruma doll, if possible. Many are paper mache; make sure there are no dents and the doll is solid.

  4. Step 4

Purchase only Daruma dolls that you love. This makes your collection more meaningful.

  5. Step 5

Write down any interesting stories surrounding your individual Daruma dolls. Keep them in a safe place to add value to the collection.

  6. Step 6

Fill in one eye if you decide to make a wish. This is often done at New Years and the wish should come true by the end of the year.

  7. Step 7

Display your collection in your home. Arrange the Daruma so guests can admire their differences.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you collect used Daruma, understand that most native Japanese will think this is very strange since you are collecting other people's old wishes.
