How to Drive on Hilly Roads

Driving on hilly roads does not seem to be very dangerous. Hills are not nearly as intimidating as mountains, but in some instances can be more hazardous. Hills can provide a fun driving experience, but make sure that you do all you can to remain safe.

1. Remain focused at all times. Whether you are on your way up a hill or down there are dangers to the driver. When descending a hill make sure your speed remains constant. Use the lower gearing of your transmission to keep your vehicle at a safe speed. When you are ascending a hill it is a good idea to shift down as well. This will help keep your speed consistent and will be less stressful on your vehicle. Driving on hilly roads can be hard on your vehicle and hard on you.

2. Remember that you never know what is on the other side of the ridge. When driving on hilly roads many accidents occur when a vehicle has pulled over on the shoulder just over the peak of a hill. You also need to be prepared for oncoming vehicles that may have drifted over into your lane as they approach you at the crest of the hill.

3. Pass on the down side of the hill. Do not attempt to pass a vehicle when ascending a hill. Driving on hilly roads requires good judgment. Even powerful vehicles can struggle to accelerate to a safe passing speed when climbing a hill. Make sure there is plenty of room to pass safely and never pass on a double yellow line.

4. Provide vehicles ascending a hill with the right of way. On a narrow road any vehicle descending a hill should yield the right of way to vehicles on their way up.

5. Take a break if you are feeling drowsy. Losing focus at the wrong time can be a deadly mistake.
