International business consultants provide guidance for corporations entering new markets. These specialized consultants use their expertise to research local areas and advise companies what modifications, if any, are necessary before introducing their products. International business consultants also navigate regulatory challenges and handle government affairs for their clients. There is no particular path that you must follow to become an international business consultant as long as you gain the appropriate expertise.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Study a related subject such as business, economics or political science in college. Participate in extra-curricular activities and internships that will get you a job in international business.

  2. Step 2

Get a job that gives you international business experience. You can work for a multi-national corporation, a worldwide consulting firm or a foreign company.

  3. Step 3

Develop expertise in a particular market, country or region. There are a few ways to achieve this goal. You can pursue an advanced degree, live and work abroad or use your experience working in the United States to guide foreign companies entering American markets.

  4. Step 4

Start a career as an independent international business consultant. Write a business plan, set up an office, create a website and print business cards. Be specific about what type of clients you will serve. If you are not focused, you won't be able to remain current in your area of expertise.

  5. Step 5

Attract clients. Use your industry contacts, referrals, conferences and trade journals to market your services.
