Step 1
Find a kosher supermarket. While you can buy many kosher items at a regular supermarket, some products such as wine, meat, dairy and baked goods should ideally be purchased at a kosher store.
-
Step 2
Know which kosher symbols are reliable. You should look on the label of every processed item you buy for a kosher symbol. Ask your rabbi which ones you should look for.
-
Step 3
Ensure your kosher dairy items have "chalav Yisroel" printed on them and your baked items say "pas Yisroel," if you follow this stringency. A regular kosher symbol will not necessarily indicate these two requirements, so you will have to check carefully.
-
Step 4
Purchase regular fruit and vegetables from any kind of store, unless you live in Israel, where certain kosher rules apply. However, leafy vegetables, broccoli, asparagus and strawberries must be checked for bugs.
-
Step 5
Buy fish from a regular store only if it is whole and has not been cut. Unless it is from a kosher store, you should "clean" the fish yourself when you get home.
-
Step 6
Stock up on hard to find kosher items that cannot be found in regular stores, such as kosher dairy and meat.
