How to Get a Motorcycle License in Montana

Instructions

1. Logon to Montana's official website at mt.gov.

2. Click on "State Agencies" and "Motor Vehicle Division" under "Justice Department."

3. Select "Driver Services" and "Forms and Other Documents." Scroll down to "Motorcycle Supplement" and download it.

4. Read over the supplement's material. Familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations of motorcycle riding on Montana's roadways. Pay special attention to sections "Preparing to Ride" and "Ride Within Your Limits."

5. Take the practice quizzes and reviews offered at the end of each section in the supplement. Testing yourself on the information presented in the supplement helps prepare you for your motorcycle permit exam.

6. Locate a full-service driver exam station.

7. Request a motorcycle permit exam. Provide identification and proof of Montana residency. Have your driving record reviewed, your physical aptitude assessed and take vision and written tests. Pass the tests.

8. Receive your motorcycle learner's permit. Practice on Montana's roadways under favorable conditions and with a licensed motorcycle rider supervising.

9. Make an appointment for an on-site skills test at a drive exam station on a rain-free day. On-skills tests are not available on days in which roadways are slick and dangerous.

10. Pass the on-skills road test. Pay all associated fees. Receive a motorcycle endorsement on your regular driver's license.
