Locate a Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch office. Visit the branch office and pick up a Maine Motorcycle Handbook.

Study the motorcycle handbook. Learn all rules and regulations regarding driving on Maine's roadways on a motorcycle. Review the information and take the practice tests at the end of each section until you feel confident enough to be officially examined.

Logon to Maine's official website at maine.gov. Click on "State Agencies," "M-N" and "Bureau of Motor Vehicles."

Select "Forms and Applications." Download and print a Motorcycle License Application.

Print your name, place of residence, mailing address, date of birth, hair color, eye color, height, weight, sex, telephone number and social security number.

Mark "Motorcycle." Write your city and county of birth. Answer questions one through eight on the application. Indicate that you are applying for a permit on your application. Sign and date your application.

Visit a Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch office. Submit your application with acceptable forms of identification. Request to take the written and vision exams.

Take and pass the written and vision exams. Obtain your permit.

Practice on Maine's roadways with a licensed motorcyclist by your side.

Contact the motor vehicles branch office when you feel confident in your ability to take an on-site skills test. Schedule an appointment for an on-site skills test.

Download a new motorcycle license application. Complete the application in the same way that you previously did. Indicate that you are not applying for a permit with this application.

Go to your appointment at the branch office. Present your application and permit. Take and pass the on-site skills test.

Pay all associated fees. Receive your motorcycle license endorsement.

Tips & Warnings
You will be required to submit two forms of acceptable identification to the motor vehicles branch office while applying. A birth certificate will be required for applicants who are 23 and under.
