Reindeer have been a part of Christmas traditions for generations. Reindeer predominately live in Finland and the Scandinavian countries, but there are a few reindeer farms in the U.S. Use these steps to learn where American reindeer farms are located and how to take your kids on a tour they will never forget.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research where reindeer farms are located in the United States by checking with the Reindeer Owners and Breeders Association. Rooftop Landing Reindeer Farm in Pewamo, Michigan, provides the animals for parades, home events and educational programs. You can also buy antlers, fleece and other items from the farm or the website. Crystal Collection Reindeer in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, mainly provides their reindeer for events at your location, but they also sell the animals and have a variety of products for sale.

  2. Step 2

Check tree farms like Kidman Tree Farm in Park City, Iowa, that may bring reindeer onto the farm for the holidays and hire them out for parades.

  3. Step 3

Contact the farm to find out about tour dates and times. Ask about the reindeer's temperament or other animals on the farm that may be present, if you are concerned about safety or any allergies your children may have.

  4. Step 4

Plan the trip. Unless you live in the area where the reindeer farm is located, this will be a holiday adventure. Treat it like you would any other vacation and plan accordingly, keeping in mind that travel is always longer and busier in the holiday months.

  5. Step 5

Gather information on local zoos. If you don't want to travel out of state to see reindeer, check with your local zoo to see if they have a reindeer exhibit. Some zoos have reindeer year-round, while others organize special holiday exhibits.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get the whole family in the mood by having a Christmas story and hot cocoa by the fire the night before you visit the reindeer farm.
  • If your children are allergic to animal dander of any form, check with your pediatrician before planning a trip to a zoo or reindeer farm.
  • Remind children before you go that the reindeer don't actually fly. You don't want a carload of disappointed children.
