Butterflies are a beautiful creature, especially Emperor butterflies. The symbolism behind a butterfly's life applies to all of us and touches many hearts. Emperors are a breed you can find around fruit groves or trees and in warmer climates. Use these steps to learn how to identify an Emperor Butterfly whether it's at a butterfly farm or out in nature.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Know the area and the climate. Emperor butterflies often feed on fruit (apples in particular), so look for them in warmer climates and in areas with fruit trees.
Step2
Look for the basic coloring. There are many breeds of Emperor butterflies, including the Tawny Emperor, the Hackberry Emperor and a few others. They are small to medium in size and are rust colored.
Step3
Notice distinguishing characteristics. Emperors have no eyespots on their upper wings.
Step4
Attract emperor butterflies to your yard to see up close. You can do this by planting clusters of flowers, instead of separating them out. Butterflies love basking in the sun and need mud puddles for nutrients. They also feed on overripe fruit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Visit a butterfly farm for an up-close look at all species of butterflies and to learn more about each breed.
  • Butterflies are fragile. Do not allow your children to play with them. Teach them to enjoy watching butterflies in their natural habitat.
