Cosmetology is a growing industry with a 37% increase in new hires between 1999 and 2003. As the trend continues, nearly two million cosmetology professionals are employed by some 340,000 salons across the U.S. Each state has a specific licensing procedure. If you're a Rhode Island resident, follow these steps to become a licensed cosmetologist.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Complete 1500 hours in a full cosmetology program. This includes hair styling, make-up and nail and skin care.

  2. Step 2

Study and successfully complete 600 hours of esthetics. This includes massage, waxing, reflexology and make-up application.

  3. Step 3

Practice nail technology for 300 classroom and practical hours. A nail tech studies nail art and design, forms and wraps, tips and gels.

  4. Step 4

Finish 650 hours of electrology. This medically recognized field allows permanent hair removal for the face and body, and has become a popular speciality.

  5. Step 5

Exhibit proficiency in practical exams in each area of required study. Final licensing includes a written exam as well.

  6. Step 6

Contact the Rhode Island Department of Health, Division of Hairdressing and Barbering to obtain an application to sit for the cosmetology exam. You can also request information regarding test locations and dates. (See Sources).

  7. Step 7

Request reciprocity if you are a licensed cosmetologist in a state that has a reciprocity agreement with Rhode Island. You may have to take additional classes or sit for the national exam.

Tips & Warnings
  • Requirements change from time to time. Check with the Rhode Island Department of Health for the most up-to-date information.
