1
Establish a clear and concise goal for the committee including what you hope to accomplish and by what date. Make sure everyone else on the committee is aware of the goals and timelines.
-
2
Draft as many volunteers as you can to join the committee. The more help you have, the easier your job will be.
-
-
3
Assign people to key positions within the group. Consider each member's past experience, but also take the opportunity to involve new people. Once you get them hooked, you broaden your pool of volunteers you can call on for future committee projects.
-
4
Call periodic committee meetings to discuss progress and make decisions. As the chairman, you should run the meeting, but it's important to create an environment where everyone can contribute comments and ideas. The more you involve people in the decision making process, the more ownership they will take in accomplishing the goal.
-
5
Make decisions that are fair and best for all concerned. You can't please everyone, but you will upset most of the group if you make decisions based on the wants or needs of just a few.

Tips & Warnings
Always keep the 80/20 rule in mind and don't lose your patience. No matter what type of club or organization it is, 80 percent of the work is always done by 20 percent of the people. It's just a fact of human behavior so accept it and set your expectations accordingly.
