There are various types of hair curlers out on the market today in addition to the old standard curler. Some of these include curlers with heat, curlers with heat and moisture, curlers that bend to create various styles and even curlers that you can put in the microwave. The idea is to create a flattering style--not to give yourself a haircut because the curlers get stuck or you don't use them safely. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what size of curlers you need to get the curl you want. Larger curlers give a big wavy look while the smaller curlers give a tight very curly look. If you have longer hair, try the larger curlers. For short cut hair, try the smaller curlers. To keep the curl lasting for awhile, use either mousse or setting gel before you wind your hair onto the curler. This is for the old type of curlers that have a snap-on case.

  2. Step 2

Take a set of curlers that are especially designed to heat up in the microwave. Place the curler set in the microwave for 10 minutes, and then take them out of the microwave. The curlers only stay in your hair for approximately 1 to 2 minutes and produce a soft, bouncy curl that lasts a long time.

  3. Step 3

Take precautions when removing curlers. Always unroll the exact same direction as you rolled them. This prevents tangling your hair and possibly having to cut out the curler.

  4. Step 4

Create long vertical curls in longer hair in minutes using hot rollers. Plug in the rollers until the indicator light comes on indicating the rollers are hot. Gently twist your hair before winding onto the heated roller. Place either a clip or the metal clips that come with hot curlers to keep curler in place. Safely remove the curlers once they are cooled which is approximately 10 to 20 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Dry your hair thoroughly with a blow dryer before using any type of heated roller. This prevents your hair from being burned from the heat.

Tips & Warnings
  • To produce the best effect, use your fingers to gently pull the curls apart then gently shake your head to place the curls.
  • Always protect your hair from the heat of hot rollers and microwave curlers by using a heat treatment protector.
  • Use a deep conditioning treatment frequently to replace moisture in your hair that using heating products can take out.
