How to Use an Open End Wrench

Among the different types of open end wrenches are the two most popular, the standard wrench which has an open end on both ends and the open end wrench which is open on one end with a ratchet type set on the other. This wrenches can be used for home improvements, car/engine work, assembly of various items such as book cases and shelves and repair and installation of appliances. Read on to learn more.

  1. Step 1

    Use an open end wrench to loosen or tighten bolts. Its versatility by having an open end allows you to flip the wrench to continue tightening or loosening. It's great for small tight areas when the other types of wrenches cannot fit.

  2. Step 2

    Use an open end wrench to tighten or loosen connections on pipes and hoses. To connect the water hoses on washers, connect the water hose to the water line. Then tighten with an open end wrench. Place the wrench around the connector and tighten in a clockwise motion. To loosen the connection use a counterclockwise motion.

  3. Step 3

    Install kitchen cabinets using an open end wrench to tighten the bolts in place after the cabinets are mounted. Use the smaller end of the wrench by turning the bolt towards you in a clockwise motion.

  4. Step 4

    Install a kitchen or bathroom sink using an open end wrench. After installing the sink, use the wrench to tighten the fittings to the water supply lines. Be careful not to over tighten or you may spring a leak.

  5. Step 5

    Install car parts using the open end wrench. The wrench has a smaller end for smaller parts such as the bolts on car batteries. Use the wrench when changing brakes to reattach the break lines.

  • Always use your safety gear when doing any type of repair or installation work at home. This includes safety glasses and gloves. There are various other types of open end wrenches that can adjust to the sizes you need. Before you start working on your car, check whether your type of vehicle takes metric or standard tools.
  • Always wear safety glasses. Fit the wrench securely on the bolt to be tightened or loosened.
  • Never tilt the wrench. It must be laying flat on the surface.
  • Never use larger wrenches as crow bars to help remove or raise items.
