Step 1
Find a regular old wooden chair with a high back. Torn cain chairs make great planters. Look at yard sales, salvage yard and thrift shops for your chair.
-
Step 2
Sand it down or leave it rough and worn looking. If there is torn fabric or material in the seat tear it off. You'll need to remove the entire bottom section where you sit. Some cushions lift right off if you loosen a few screws.
-
Step 3
Measure the inside width of your chair. Cut six pieces of wood using a 2x4 or similar strip of wood to fit the dimensions where the cushion was. You'll need four to make the sides and two for underneath.
-
Step 4
Make your box with the wood by drilling screws to hold all six pieces together. You can make cuts and grooves, then glue your pieces if you would rather attach them that way. Secure with vice grips until they dry. Drill holes for drainage in the bottom boards.
-
Step 5
Nail the box in where the seat was by securing nails to chair legs and back of the chair. Be sure that it is in there straight. You can have the box sit high or low inside which ever you would prefer.
-
Step 6
Paint your planter and decorate. Paint a garden design like ladybugs and herbs on your chair. Use your favorite colors and embellish it with charming details. Apply a coat or two of non-yellowing varnish to protect it from the weather.
-
Step 7
Put your soil and herbs or plants inside your planter box. Water the plants and admire your handiwork.
