When we speak in public, the goal is to captivate the room. According to one professor of speech communications, there are "universal truths" in communications, that is, basic elements apply regardless of the topic, the occasion or the room. For those who want to be successful when speaking in public, these truths are "imperatives."

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with a "bang." The first thirty seconds of with your audience sets the tone for your speech. Go for a great first impression. Make sure you look your best, speak slowly and clearly, and smile.

  2. Step 2

Ask yourself, "Why should these people listen to me?" Once you get their attention, let them know you have specific speaking objectives.

  3. Step 3

Look them in the eye. Romance the audience with eye contact and capture their attention with your directness. Know your material well enough so that you can make eye contact with several people in the audience while you are speaking.

  4. Step 4

Spice up your presentation with variety. Combat monotony (and resulting boredom) by switching up your vocal patterns and supporting materials.

  5. Step 5

End your speech before it is expected. As important as the first impression is the last impression. Assure that your audience stays with you right up until you stop talking by ending earlier than expected.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stow the apology. Don't downplay your speech by starting off with an apology. You don't want to reveal a lack of confidence in the words you have prepared or in your delivery.
  • The best way of overcoming fear of public speaking is to do it anyway.
