How to Hire Technical Staff

Your technical staff is the life and blood of your business. In our technology driven age, you cannot spend too much effort finding qualified technical staff to hire, for poor technical support can mean a death sentence for your business venture. The extra time and effort required to ensure you hire qualified technical staff has it's rewards in the long run. Read on to learn more.

  1. Step 1

    Determine what qualifications and prerequisites for your technical staff. Think about everything that's required of the individual to know when they're hired. List the items in order of most important. Know what you can logically settle for in the candidate or basic requirements for the job.

  2. Step 2

    Look within your own company infrastructure for an employee that is qualified. Often, you will find you already have the personnel you need.

  3. Step 3

    Write an advertisement specifying all of your desired qualities. Include contact information and a way for applicants to send in resumes.

  4. Step 4

    Review the resumes you receive. Talk with prospective candidates on the phone to determine if they meet your minimum requirements. Set up interviews with qualified individuals.

  5. Step 5

    Discuss the parameters of the job in the interviews. Take detailed notes about candidates past work history and technical abilities. Have the candidate perform a basic technical function that is required of the position they desire.

  6. Step 6

    Decide on two or three candidates for a second interview. Contact their references to ensure that they are good workers.

  7. Step 7

    Talk about the candidate's future goals and ambitions during the second interview. Ask about their salary requirements. Choose the candidate that best meets your company's needs, and alert them all of your decision. Hire the individual for a trial run of 60-90 days. This gives you time to ensure you have hired the right technical staff.
