If you are disabled or become disabled and are a resident of Massachusetts, you can apply for disabled parking permits. Most disabled persons who meet the criteria for disability under Massachusetts law are issued a disabled parking placard. Disability license plates are only available for disabled veterans or for disabled persons who have a motorcycle.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Check the disability conditions detailed in the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) rules to determine if you have a qualifying disability.
Step2
Download and print the Application for Disabled Parking Placard/Plate from the Massachusetts RMV website. Complete all of the sections on the front page of the application form, including the applicant certification.
Step3
Give the application to your physician or other recognized health care provider to certify the medical diagnosis. The medical professional also designates the disability as temporary or permanent, and estimates the number of months for a temporary disability.
Step4
Send the completed and certified application to the Massachusetts RMV Medical Affairs Branch at the address shown on the form. The form can also be submitted in person to the RMV.

Tips & Warnings

  • The application must be submitted to the RMV within 30 days of the medical certification statement.
  • The medical information provided in the application form can affect the status of your driver's license after the RMV reviews the application.
