How to Make a Career of a Sewing Hobby
Most people learn how to sew as a hobby from their parents or relatives. Although you can take classes and go to school to be a seamstress, you don't necessarily need an education to succeed. You can make a career of your sewing hobby by working for an alteration shop or other businesses in need of these skills. You can also go into business for yourself.

1
Create a price list that includes all the sewing techniques you are able to do and how much you want to charge for each. Call your local alteration shop to get an idea of what they charge.
-
2
Buy or upgrade your sewing machine to the most versatile one you can afford. Check thrift shops and classifieds for used ones if necessary.
-
-
3
Continue to do sewing favors for friends and relatives but at a discount. Ask them to recommend you to their friends and co-workers. Pass out your price list.
-
4
Take classes to improve your skills and learn new techniques. Consider working part-time in a sewing shop to get professional experience and contacts.
-
5
Get a specialized skill to earn more money. If you live in a military town, learn how to repair uniforms and sew on military insignia. Make prom dresses all year and sell them during prom season. Or sew wedding dresses for future brides.
-
6
Advertise your skills in logical places. If you want to make and sell prom dresses, hang flyers in the local high school hangouts. If you make wedding dresses, ask local wedding planners to refer you to their clients.
-
7
Enroll in a business class to learn the basics about running your own small business.
