Step 1
Start out with a simple, yet classic, gnome design. Try Gus the Original garden gnome or one of his classic buddies.
-
Step 2
Look for gnomes involved in activities that you enjoy. Fishing and playing the flute are just two examples of the many different activities in which you can find gnomes engaged.
-
Step 3
Begin slowly, and gradually build up your collection. Appreciate the qualities that each gnome has to bring and use careful consideration before adding another member to the family.
-
Step 4
Work your way through the original creations of Rien Poortvliet, famous illustrator of the book "Gnomes." His designs can be found at many retail stores.
-
Step 5
Check out the garden gnomes of other designers, such as Kimmel Gnomes or Tom Clark Gnomes. Choose a designer whose creations fit your style, then start adopting your favorite gnomes.
-
Step 6
Find out the story behind your gnome. Each gnome has a story unique to it, and much of the whimsy in owning a gnome is in the story of its origins.
-
Step 7
Choose your gnomes selectively. Find ones that you really like and can give a good home to. Gnomes are all individuals with different personalities; try to find ones whose personalities match yours.
-
Step 8
Consider buying a gnome door, wishing well or toadstool statue to place in your yard for your gnomes.
-
Step 9
Expand your collection once you feel like you are a tried-and-true lover of gnomes to include pieces outside of the traditional garden gnomes. Look for small gnomes to place around the house or other gnome-related items.
