Stanford University, founded in 1885, sits midway between San Francisco and San Jose, California, in the small town of Palo Alto. The 8,200-acre campus has a current enrollment of around 15,000 students, about 60 percent of whom are pursuing graduate degrees. Notable alumni include golfers Tiger Woods and Tom Watson, former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, astronaut Sally Ride, and President Herbert Hoover.

Step1
Plan a trip to the San Francisco Bay area. Stanford University, in Palo Alto California, is located about 35 miles south of San Francisco and about twenty minutes from the San Francisco International Airport. Visitors may also fly into nearby San Jose International airport.
Step2
Tour the Stanford campus. Stanford University offers free one-hour walking tours every day except for during winter break and some holidays. The tours begin at the Visitor Information Services center in the Memorial Auditorium at 11 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. For more information, visit the "Visitors & Neighbors" section, click on the "Visitor Information Services" link and then choose the option "Walking Tours" from the "Campus Tours" menu.
Step3
Contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for more information. Prospective students are encouraged to make an interview appointment with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and pick up more information on campus life, academic programs and financial aid. The office may be reached at (650) 723-2091.
Step4
Enjoy the unique architecture and art at Stanford. While at the campus, make sure to visit the Hanna House, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building; the Hoover Tower, the university's landmark tower with a public observation deck and the Cantor Arts Center, home to 24 galleries of paintings and sculpture, including the largest collection of Rodin bronzes outside of Paris.
