Stanford University, founded in 1885, sits midway between San Francisco and San Jose, California, in the small town of Palo Alto. 1. Plan a trip to the San Francisco Bay area. Stanford University, in Palo Alto California, is located about 35 miles south of San Francisco and about twenty minutes from the San Francisco International Airport. Visitors may also fly into nearby San Jose International airport.
2. Tour the Stanford campus. Stanford University offers free one-hour walking tours every day except for during winter break and some holidays.
