If you've ever wished you could trade ringtones with others, you'll be pleased to know that transferring ringtones to other phones is fairly easy. In the past, this feature was often blocked by cell and ringtone providers, or the transfer technology did not exist. Now, many people create their own ringtones using sound-editing software. The process of sending ringtones is usually no different than what you would do to send any other form of media to other phones.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two Bluetooth-enabled cellphones

    Send Ringtones Using Bluetooth

  1. Step 1

Make sure both phones are Bluetooth enabled. Most of the newer phones have this feature.

  2. Step 2

Search in your sound folder for the file of the ringtone you are trying to send and select it.

  3. Step 3

Select "Send" from the menu of available options, and choose "via Bluetooth" if you are prompted with other methods.

  4. Step 4

Make sure both devices are within Bluetooth range. Some Bluetooth devices have a range of over 20 feet, but it's best to have the devices as close as possible when transmitting media files.

  5. Step 5

Search for nearby Bluetooth devices. Your phone will scan its Bluetooth range for other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

  6. Step 6

Choose the appropriate Bluetooth device from the list. Cellphones typically display the cellphone username if it is designated. Brand and model numbers may also be used to identify the device.

  7. Send Ringtones by Other Means

  8. Step 1

Send a ringtone as an attachment to a text message if both you and the recipient have cellphones that support media-text messages.

  9. Step 2

Attach a ringtone file to an email, and send it to an email-capable cellphone.

  10. Step 3

Beam ringtones from one phone to another using your phone's infrared connection. Not all phones have an infrared connection, so this only works with certain types of phones.

  11. Step 4

Email a ringtone attachment to a computer. Another phone can sync with the computer, installing the ringtone that way.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save money by buying ringtones to share with your friends. Create your own ringtones from MP3s you already own. Send them to your friends as gifts.
  • Transfer graphic wallpaper, photos and video the same way you would a ringtone.
  • Be aware that you may run into some phone services that make the transfer of ringtones difficult or even impossible. Some cellphone providers have features to block the transmission of ringtones via wireless protocol. Also, some ringtones purchased online come in locked files that make them difficult to transfer.

on 11/18/2008 Is there any way of transferring BUILT-IN ringtones (ie those not actually stored as files) from one phone to another?
