Cell phone headsets offer numerous advantages to users, which accounts for their wide popularity. By allowing you to go hands-free while you talk, you can accomplish many other tasks concurrently. The headset market makes up a significant part of the cell phone accessories industry, and technology is ever improving to make headsets better. Today, Bluetooth headsets using wireless protocols are the most popular trend, as they provide major benefits over their wired counterparts.

Things You’ll Need:

Shop for a Bluetooth Headset

Step1
Determine whether your cell phone is Bluetooth enabled. Virtually all of the newer phones have this feature and many of the older models as well.
Step2
Visit an electronics store or cell phone provider's store, or look online for a selection of Bluetooth headsets. There are hundreds of different Bluetooth headsets on the market.
Step3
Try on headsets for comfort. This is a matter of personal preference, but many people prefer to wear a headset with a gel ear bud for its comfort and noise-canceling properties. Multiple ear buds come with each headset you buy, so you can choose a size that fits your ear shape snugly and comfortably.
Step4
Choose a headset with noise-canceling features for the microphone. Without noise canceling, callers will hear feedback from noisy environments when you talk. Boom microphones that extend toward the mouth also help with this problem, but they are not as aesthetically pleasing.
Step5
Consider button location when shopping for a Bluetooth headset. Check the headset to be sure the on/off button and volume controls are within reach while it is on your ear. You don't want to have take off your headset to adjust the volume or end the call.
Step6
Buy a headset with the longest battery life you can afford. The convenience of a Bluetooth headset is lost if you have to recharge the battery constantly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for headsets that allow you to voice dial. You'll really be hands free when you don't need to pick up the phone to dial a number. Your phone must support this feature, however, so check your user manual.
  • Consider buying a headset with a built in locater to make it easier to find around the house. It's easy to misplace something so small.
  • Buy a headset that broadcasts in stereo if you plan to use it to listen to music from your phone. Only available on the newest phones, this feature allows you to use your phone like an MP3 player until a call breaks in and the music is automatically paused.
  • Check online reviews of a product before you buy. There are lots of cheap Bluetooth products that are unreliable and lose the continuous pairing with your phone. This could cause you to miss calls and waste your time.
