GPS equipment can be used in a variety of ways. Used alone on a hiking trail, for instance, you probably do not need any external cables or adapters. When using a GPS in your car, house or to transfer data to your computer, you may need additional accessories in order for the systems to work properly.

Use Cables and Adapters to Provide Power to Your GPS

  1. Step 1

Buy a cigarette-lighter adapter so you can use your GPS in the car without draining the GPS batteries.

  2. Step 2

Insert the adapter into the car's cigarette lighter and attach to the GPS. The adapter will charge the GPS while you drive.

  3. Step 3

Purchase an AC adapter cable to use with your GPS at home. Plug it into your wall outlet to charge the batteries or to conserve them while the GPS runs on your home's electricity.

  4. Use GPS Cables and Adapters to Transfer Data

  5. Step 1

Connect a USB adapter to your GPS and computer if they have different interfaces. Attach the USB end of the adapter to your USB-based GPS and the D9B serial port end to your computer. Now the GPS will be able to transfer data to your computer.

  6. Step 2

Select a Bluetooth adapter kit to give your GPS receiver wireless networking capabilities. Some newer GPS models are produced with WiFi capabilities, but you can also upgrade your existing GPS with the right cables.

  7. Step 3

Turn your personal digial assistant (PDA) into a GPS with an adapter. This cord has a universal connector, which allows you to connect it to a PDA, serial or USB port.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the packaging before you buy. GPS cords and adapters are clearly marked with the model numbers for which they are made.
  • Your GPS user guide will have information about the type of cables you can use for certain functions. Some GPS kits include basic cables, such as power adapters. If you have any questions, contact the manufacturer.
  • Remember to install included drivers that you may need when using adapters with your computer. If you fail to do so, the computer will not recognize the adapter and the information will not transfer.
  • Never force the connector end of a cable into your GPS if it does not fit smoothly. If you are having trouble, double-check the packaging and your GPS to confirm that they are compatible. Forcing the connection can damage your electronics and possibly lead to injury.
