  • Serial or USB cables with drivers

  • Computer
  • GPS
  • User manual

Connect a GPS to a PC for Data Transfer

  1. Step 1

Look at your GPS user guide to determine what type of port the GPS uses. Older devices use a serial port, while newer versions usually have a USB port. The manual will also tell you what type of cables you will need to purchase if they are not already included with your GPS.

  2. Step 2

Ascertain whether your PC has a USB port or a serial communication port by examining the back of your computer. If your PC and GPS do not have the same type of port, you will need a converter in order to connect the two machines.

  3. Step 3

Make sure your GPS has a steady power source before you transfer data to your computer. Have extra batteries available or attach the GPS to a DC adapter that receives power from a wall outlet.

  4. Step 4

Install GPS software and any necessary drivers on your computer so you will have a way to read the data you are transferring. The manufacturer of your GPS may have recommendations about software that works well with your model.

  5. Step 5

Plug the serial or USB cable into your GPS and your PC. You may be asked to enter GPS settings information. Refer to your GPS manual for assistance about settings.

  6. Step 6

Open your GPS software before you start downloading from your GPS receiver. Wait until the transfer is complete before closing the program.

  7. Step 7

Unplug the cables from your PC and GPS after downloading the tracking information. Disconnecting too soon may lead to an interruption of the transfer and might cause you to lose any stored information.

Tips & Warnings
  • Converters can connect a GPS with a USB port to a PC with a serial port, or a GPS with a nine-pin (DB9) serial port to a computer with a 25-pin (DB25) port. Converters are accompanied by a driver that you install on your computer to tell it how to use the converter or other device.
  • GPS software is available for Macintosh computer users as well as PC users. In many cases, the process of connecting a GPS to a Mac is easier, because the USB-to-USB connection does not require the installation of drivers.
