How to Allow Port Forwarding for Slingbox
To get the most out of your Slingbox, you will need to configure your Slingbox so that you can access it from outside of your home. Port forwarding allows outside computers or devices to access devices that are connected to your home network. While configuring port forwarding can be a tricky process, Slingbox software can often do much of the work for you.
Instructions
-
Configure Your Router to Allow Port Forwarding for Your Slingbox
-
1
Enable remote viewing for your Slingbox. This option is available during the initial guided setup. If you have already set up your Slingbox, click on "Edit Properties" in the Slingbox Directory of the SlingPlayer software to enable remote viewing.
-
2
Log into the administrative page for your router so that you can allow port forwarding. If you changed the password for your router, you will need to enter the new password. Otherwise, you will need to enter the default password based on the factory settings.
-
-
3
Select the port forwarding option from the administrative page of your router. From this page, you will need to create a new setting for port forwarding.
-
4
Enter the necessary information to allow port forwarding on your router. You may need to enter a name for the port forwarding, a range of inbound ports, a private IP address and the private port number. The necessary information is specific to the router (see Resources below).
-
5
Confirm the settings on the administrative page of your router. Be certain to log out so that no unauthorized person will be able to make changes to your router.
-
6
Try to access your Slingbox from a network outside of your home. If your neighbors have a wireless network and your computer has a wireless network card, you may want to ask their permission to connect to their network to test your Slingbox. If you have a laptop computer, you can try to use the SlingPlayer software from a WiFi hotspot.

Tips & Warnings
The SlingPlayer software can attempt to configure your router automatically. You will need to provide the make and model of your router. If the SlingPlayer software is unable to configure your router automatically, you will need to allow port forwarding manually.
Depending on your router, the port forwarding option may also be referred to as "virtual servers" or "port mapping."
