Hunting large game generally requires the finest rifle scopes available on the market. Not only does the rifle scope need to work well with large caliber rifles, but it needs to put some distance between the shooter's ears and the weapon itself. It also needs to boast superior optics, and a high degree of dependability under pressure.

Buy a Rifle Scope for Large Game

Step1
Choose a rifle scope that has been specifically designed not only to spot big game, but to work with larger caliber rifles as well. Generally, these scopes are elevated to put some distance between your head and the rifle. In addition, large game rifle scopes often have crosshairs, or reticles, that are more useful in tracking larger animals by using specific grids.
Step2
Buy a rifle scope that has a magnifying power of anywhere from 3 to 9 times of the normal image. Magnifying power isn't as important in large game rifle scopes, but the quality and clarity of the image is. This is because many animals must be shot in precise locations or else they will run for miles before they die. Being able to see the animal clearly is of paramount importance.
Step3
Use a scope that has plenty of "eye relief." These are protective rubber cups, sunshades or spacers that are designed to prevent the scope from flying backward from the recoil of the shot, potentially hitting you in the eye. This is, of course, another good reason for wearing eye protection while using large caliber rifles.
Step4
Do not cheap out when you buy a scope for a high-powered rifle. Large game hunters often say, "Buy the best scope you can't afford," and often recommend spending as much on your scope as you did on your rifle. With large game scopes, the quality and clarity of the optics of the scope are much more useful than magnifying power or the diameter of the lens.
Step5
Purchase a large game rifle scope from a reputable gun dealer or sporting goods store that will be able to recommend a durable, well-made product. Since there is a fairly high degree of danger in large game hunting, you must be able to depend on your equipment at all times.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use ear protection and eye protection whenever firing a large caliber rifle. The sound from a rifle blast can impair your hearing permanently.
