Step 1
Choose the proper rifle scope that will both increase your accuracy and mount properly onto your rifle. Make sure the scope will not interfere with any of the rifle's basic functions, such as restricting the movement of the bolt handle on a bolt action rifle.

Pick a rifle scope that will increase your accuracy in the areas that are most important to you. For instance, choose a scope with a higher magnifying power (generally 10 to 15 times magnification) if you desire improvement at longer distances. You can also pick a scope with a larger lens diameter (40 to 50 mm), which will allow more light to enter the scope, and make targets easier to see.

Find the right type of crosshairs (or reticles) with which you feel most comfortable. Most scopes are available with a variety of reticles, from duplexes, where the crosshairs become thinner toward the bullseye, or German reticles, which more closely approximate the shape of gun sights. Some scopes even provide illuminated bullseyes, or automatically adjust for bullet drop and wind direction, increasing your accuracy even more.

Step 4
Learn how to properly boresight your rifle scope out in the field. This involves matching the crosshairs on your scope to the bore, or barrel of your rifle, by focusing on a target 25 to 50 feet away. By making fine adjustments until the bore and the scope are equally aligned, you can quickly replace and adjust different scopes as needed.

Make even finer adjustments on your rifle scope by taking a few practice shots, grouping your shots close together, and using the horizontal and vertical adjustment knobs until you are hitting your target accurately and consistently.
