Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
Connect the DVR
Step1
Select the right DVR for your cable system. If you bought the box yourself rather than renting one from the cable company, you will need to confirm that the model is compatible with your cable and that the connections and USB ports work properly.
Step2
Hook your DVR to your cable box or directly to your TV if your system allows for it. Each company has its own set of protocols made to conform to the specific brand and cable system. Make an appointment for a cable representative to install the box for you, or ask for a manual so you can learn the steps required to properly hook up the box yourself.
Step3
Don't use the front panel connections for anything. If you are renting the DVR box from your cable company, these connections have probably been disabled so nothing can be connected there. If you own your own box, still avoid them. Because of the way the system is set up, these connections may interfere with the signal or cause considerable white noise.
Use a Cable DVR
Step1
Use your DVR as you would a VCR, but without having to worry about running out of space on a tape. Since the DVR records programs to a hard drive, you have no limits as to how many programs you can save for later viewing.
Step2
Access the user settings in your DVR box to adjust the menu. You will need to select screen format (either 16:9 widescreen or 4:3 letterbox) and then choose the appropriate HDMI/YPbPr output. This will ensure that all channels play on the same HD format.
Step3
Select a program you want to record and then input the information into the DVR using your remote control. You have the option of setting the system for a one-time recording (such as in the case of a movie) or ongoing recording (for weekly series).
