The iPod is a portable media player designed and marketed by Apple. Music is downloaded to the iPod from Apple's iTunes store via iTunes software. While iPods are great for listening to music on the go, sometimes people want to put down their earphones and listen to their music on a really good sound system. A docking station or portable audio system can make that possible.

    Buy an iPod Stereo

  1. Step 1

Review your budget before you buy. There are several models of iPods out there, and the features you get will depend on how much money you can afford to pay. The 80 GB iPod video, for instance, has a capacity of 20,000 songs, while the 1GB iPod shuffle only holds 240 songs but is much less expensive.

  2. Step 2

Purchase an iPod. Shop around. You may get a better deal on your iPod by buying it from a discount retailer instead of purchasing it at an Apple Store.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a docking station or portable audio system to turn your iPod into a full-blown stereo system. As with the iPod, there are many models to choose from. Most docking stations are manufactured by third-party companies but one, the iPod Hi-Fi, is made by Apple.

  4. Step 4

Shop carefully and read some reviews. Consider price but also consider the features you will be getting. Higher-end docking station models usually have surround-sound-like or satellite speakers with subwoofers and more watts per channel and come with remote controls.

  5. Step 5

Pop an iPod into a docking station and listen to a few tunes before you buy. Analyze the sound carefully and be sure that you are completely satisfied. It's the sound you'll be listening to for a long time.

  6. Step 6

Look for a docking station with international plugs. For anyone planning an overseas trip, this will allow you to travel with your own portable stereo system.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that the iPod you purchase has a dock connector, or you will not be able to connect it to a docking station.
  • If you would like to listen to your iPod via your car stereo speakers while you are driving, there are adapters available that will directly connect an iPod to most factory and aftermarket car stereos.
