How to Compare Plasma and DLP Technology

Plasma screen TVs and DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology both offer the promise of large picture size and crystal-clear clarity. They also take up less room than traditional televisions. These televisions enable customers to view high-definition programs the way they were meant to be experienced.

  1. Step 1

    Notice the basic difference between plasma and DLP technology. Plasma screens use pixels colored by natural gases to produce their incredible clarity, while DLP uses micro-mirrors to create light and dark. Color is filled in on a DLP screen with the help of a color wheel.

  2. Step 2

    Look for contrast ratings. Contrast is the difference between light and dark, and the higher contrast rating, the better the picture. A contrast rating of 1000 to 1 or higher is excellent.

    Compare plasma clarity against DLP clarity. Clarity is one of the major advantages of both types of technology. After you watch HDTV on either a plasma screen or DLP, you may never want to go back to a regular old television again. Pay close attention to clarity while you're shopping for plasma screens, because it can vary from one manufacturer to another.

    Compare plasma color and DLP color. Since DLP technology is relatively new, it still has time to catch up to plasma, which is the definite winner when it comes to color. Plasma colors are brighter and more accurate, though DLP color is still an improvement over your old TV.
