How to Create a Home Theater

A home theater is a complete audio and video package that recreates the large screen and full sound of a movie theater. Recent technological advancements have made home theater products much more available and affordable. It's fairly easy to create a home theater system if you have some disposable income and time to do product comparisons.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Create a Home Theater

  1. Step 1

Check if your current TV will work in a home theater situation. You may or may not need a high-definition TV, but a large screen and clear picture are definitely essential. Your TV can be used for a theater setup and still work as a regular TV when you aren't watching movies.

  2. Step 2

Shop for a home theater receiver. This device processes both the audio and video signal before sending an output to the speaker system. You can buy receivers with a DVD player built in if you don't have one already.

  3. Step 3

Look for a surround sound speaker system. You want to have two main speakers to handle the left and right audio channels, plus a subwoofer and two satellite speakers that will be installed in the back of the room. There are some systems that can replicate surround sound with fewer speakers if you don't have room for a full setup in your home theater.

  4. Step 4

Buy flatwire for your speaker connections if you want to hide the wires. This type of wire can be run under carpets or stuck to walls and painted over without being damaged. You can also buy a wireless system that attaches to your speakers and receiver to help reduce the amount of wiring.

  5. Step 5

Setup the television and then create an audio focus point by pointing the two main speakers at the main couch or chairs in front of the TV. The subwoofer can be placed just about anywhere, while the satellite speakers point inward or along the back wall. You'll probably have to do some fine-tuning once you get everything hooked up.

Tips & Warnings
  • A home-theater-in-a-box includes a receiver and all the necessary speakers for surround sound and may be a good first home theater.
  • For an authentic home theater, purchase a rear-projector and screen. A good home theater projector can cost several thousand dollars, though, so be prepared to spend a lot of money on this.
  • You may be able to find a home theater servicing company in your area that can help you optimize the sound and setup of your room. It takes some equipment tweaking and experience to create the ideal home theater.
