How to Register a Classroom Website Name

A classroom website is a great way to communicate with both parents and students. It allows you to communicate direct with the parents without depending on the students to deliver a note home. And it can help you communicate with your students using a classroom website. If you are looking to create your own classroom website (with a catchy web address) this is the first step.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Roughly $3 a year for securing the name
  • Roughly $49 a year to have your website hosted

Step1
Find a host. If you are planning on starting a website that is not connected to a free service like Google Page Creator then you must register/secure your domain name (web address) first. There are several companies that will help you do this.
Step2
Browse different possible hosts. Enom.com or Channelme.tv will secure your domain name for $1.99 and $24.95 a year respectively. This only secures the name. This does not mean that they will host your website for you for that price. You can easily search the availability of a web address on those websites. My advice is to find a .com that you can secure rather than settling for a .net,.org or any other non-.com name that may be available.
Step3
Select a name for your classroom website and check for it's availability. Simply type in the name of your desired website and the site will tell you if it's already taken. Select a name that is easy to spell by your students and probably relevant to the classroom. Perhaps you can name the website after the room number or class mascot.
Step4
Select a host for your website. If you do sign up for them to host you site remember:
1. Don't worry about your website becoming too large. The content that takes up the most space on any website are movies and if you do not plan on having a lot of movies on your site then it will probably won't get too large. If you do plan on people viewing a lot of movies on your site my advice would be to upload the videos to Channelme.tv (for free) and create links on your website to each of the videos.
